And advice for sober solo travelers?

Hello friends, It’s getting to that time where I’m ready to pull the trigger on booking my flights and actually going on one of the legs of my dream trips. The first of which will be a month in Colombia this year followed by Peru/Bolivia rest of S.A. I want to see next year. My friends are all excited and telling me to go but they all ask the same question.. “are you gonna stay sober”

Just to explain a little, alcohol as taken me to the gates of hell and it’s just something I can’t do anymore. I’ve solo travelled in the passed but drinking was a huge part of those trips. Whether it was being drunk at the Carlton brewery in Melbourne, exploring all the pubs in London, or drinking all the beer I could in Seattle, all my trips have been about drinking. I’ve been wanting to take the South America trip for years yet every year it’s get delayed until next year because I haven’t been able to save the money or something shitty happened life due to, well, you get the picture.

This year I’m making it happen. I have my dates, I have found my flights and all I need to do is enter my card information, yet this voice in the back of my head that always shows it doubts is there. I identify that the only reason I’m actually financially able to go is due to making the right life choices and the last thing I want is to be in a foreign country thinking “no ones even gonna know, why not” and I get too intoxicated and something horrible happens. I don’t want to regret my decision to go bc I allowed someone to convince me to do something that put me in jail or I’m off my guard and I lose all my shit or wind up in the hospital.

Thanks for listening to my rant and concerns and if you have any advice please send it this way. I’m 28/m from California for what it’s worth.

Safe travels ✌️
