What’s the biggest tips you have for someone embarking on a 5-6 month road trip through Canada and US on a budget.
So far I’ve learned a good bit from the other thread I’ve posted and I quite enjoyed the conversations I had with people on that thread! So far I’ve learned about taking showers at truck stops for a fee or sometimes there’s a deal if you buy gas. I’ve been suggested to bring a spare battery in case the one in my car dies. I’ve been suggested to use maps.me for an offline map, though I was aware of this app already and currently use it for backpacking Europe :). Also been informed about freecampsites.net for free camping which is definitely going to be a money saver. I’ve been told I should avoid Banff, Jasper and Yoho during peak season lol, though sadly that’s not possible, gotta visit whenever I get the opportunity and this road trip will be the one chance I get probably within the next 5 years to make up west as I have so many other trips planned already outside of the continent. Some things I knew already is that I’m definitely going to want TIL learn how to change my tires and oil (sorry I know nothing about cars so how to do this stuff is all a mystery to me, but my grandfather will teach me).
Perhaps I could use some gear suggestions? I want the road trip to have a fair amount of national parks and cities, but I still want to prioritize the national/provincial/state parks over cities, but if I’m driving by/through a city that interests me I’m definitely going to be stopping for a couple of days as again it’ll likely be the only time I get to see them within the next foreseeable future.
I’m thinking of getting a semi small stove to cook basic things on, any good suggestions? I don’t think it needs to be small enough to bring with me while wild camping but I’d still like something that doesn’t take up a lot of space in the trunk.
Also what sort of rent would you recommend? I’m hoping for a two person tent so maybe my mom/dad can fly down for a week to camp with me while I’m around the big national parks (Zion, Banff, etc) but small enough I can fit it into a backpack to go wild camping with while on trails, but again something easy to set up as again another thing I need to learn is how to setup a tent on my own... Not sure about price range for the tent, it’ll probably be a Christmas gift from my mom+dad so it doesn’t need to be the cheapest option possible, but I don’t want them to spend too much on me for Christmas and vice versa haha, I just want something decent for a beginner.
Thanks in advance for the help, I’m quickly falling in love with this sub! If I wasn’t specific enough on anything let me know and I’ll edit the post.
