Thoughts on Guatemala?
Hey all - 25/m here looking to take my first solo trip. I'll be starting grad school in the fall and want to take a few weeks to do some travel over the summer before the semester gets started.
I haven't decided for sure where I want to go, but Guatemala has been on my list for awhile. I've traveled throughout Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean with friends and/or on a study abroad program in college, but I've never made it to Central America. Of the countries in Central America, Guatemala is the most interesting to me because it has a combination of historic cities, Mayan ruins, and outdoor activities, but is not as touristy as somewhere like Costa Rica.
I definitely plan to travel there within the next few years, but I wanted to get some opinions about whether it's a great place for a solo mid-20's male traveler. Here's my concern: I'm a 6'1, 200 lb male who speaks decent Spanish and has traveled a good amount around the world, so I realize that with reasonable precautions, safety shouldn't be a huge issue for me. But I also recognize that most of Central America doesn't have the best reputation for safety at the moment, which might scare off a lot of other travelers.
Since I'll be traveling alone, I want to be able to meet other travelers around my age. Friends of either gender are great, but I definitely wouldn't mind if some of them are single women lol. And I'm wondering if a lot of people in this group have been scared off by all the bad news coming out of Central America.
Has anyone here been to Guatemala recently that could speak to that? Are there enough single travelers in their 20's/ early 30's to make it a fun/ social experience for a solo traveler my age? Or would it be better to wait and go to with a friend?
