Road trip from Houston, TX to San Francisco, CA and back

I've been planning a road trip from Houston to SF and back for the past few weeks and it's starting to solidify. All of the possible itineraries resemble the following:

Houston -> El Paso -> Santa Fe -> Denver -> ????????? -> Lake Tahoe -> SF -> Los Angeles -> Las Vegas -> Grand Canyon -> ???????? -> Carlsbad Caverns -> Houston

The main question is what we would be doing between Denver and Lake Tahoe. I've come up with a few ideas, some of which are:

- Denver -> Yellowstone -> Twin Falls, ID -> Lake Tahoe

- Denver -> Salt Lake City -> Lake Tahoe

We have a maximum of 14 days to do all of this, so I'm not sure if we should try to pack as much into it as we can, or take out a few things in order to spend more time in the places we wind up really enjoying.
