Making a road trip from San Diego to UCF -Orlando. Do you think it's better to fly to Florida instead of driving?

I am going back to school!
I have never been on a long road trip like this one. The main reason why am considering this in the first place is because of my excessive luggage(TV/Piano Keyboard etc) and I think driving all the way will save some buck. But is it worth it?
If so do you suggest any stops on the way that will enhance the experience? I am not really in a big hurry and can spend up to a week or more on road.
I have a 2015 Honda Civic.

Also, I am concerned about the places that I have to spend my nights. Since I have luggage in the car I am not sure if I should stop at a hotel and leave the car alone. What do you think? Are there any campgrounds on the way that I can use?
