Kinda got scammed out of 500 euros
So I'm on a month long trip to Europe and the first 8 days of my trip is solo. My first solo trip actually. One week in Amsterdam and a day in Antwerp before meeting my friend in Brussels the following day. I was having a great time until yesterday.
After having a late breakfast I was walking through the city on a casual stroll. I walk past a skin care store and they were handing out free samples of hand lotion. I figured why not just grab some since my hands have been getting really tough lately from rock climbing. When I got up to the samples, the women working there starts asking me about where I'm from, etc. I chalked it up to her just be friendly. She then says "Actually, come in for a minute, I want to show you something." I should have known right there that this was nothing but some kind of sales technique but I was feeling adventurous due to my trip I guess. She then proceeds to tell me what kind of skin I have an all that and applies some peelers and facial moisturizers. The thing is that I did see how they made a difference even though I don't care for this sort of thing at all. She also offered me champagne and was really good at striking up conversations. In the end I purchased a few products that rang up at 150 euros. I was kinda feeling "ehh" about the purchase but also took it as a "Treat Yo Self" moment.
However, this is where it got really bad. She then said wait I'd like to show you something else. I knew that I should have said no thanks but it was almost like I was under a spell and couldn't not sit back down. After a few more demonstrations I'm then standing there with a 350 euro bill. My card declines and then she takes me practically in hand to an atm to take the rest of the money out. If anyone had told me this story I wouldn't be able to understand how they didn't just say no but this women's sales technique was flawless and I swear she had me under some type of spell (I'm a gay guy so her sexuality had nothing to do with it, although she was beautiful). I seat here now in my hostel getting the courage to return all of the stuff but my anxiety is so right now. I know I'll feel better afterwards though.
