Is Sicily good for solo (female) travel?
I literally just made another post about traveling in mainland Italy, but I have also been wanting to go to Sicily for a long time. My dad’s side of the family is from there and I’d like to go there myself.
My main concerns are as follows:
1) I’m a woman traveling alone. Is it generally safe for women to travel around Sicily (Palermo, Agrigento, Catania, Siracusa, Cefalù) on their own?
2) I don’t speak Sicilian. I know some basic Italian, but I’m not super confident in it at the moment. The only language I’m fluent in and completely comfortable speaking is English. Will I be able to get by with English/limited Italian? Will I be able to use public transportation easily? Will I be able to communicate at restaurants/tourist sites, etc.?
For anyone who has been to Sicily (particularly women), where there any worries that you had that went away when you got there? Were there things you wish you had known before going there?
Just to get it out of the way: I would exclusively be using public transportation while there. I know Sicily runs on it’s own version of island time, so I don’t mind some delays. I just don’t want a bunch of comments telling me I should rent a car lol.
