Is Naples, Italy anything like Athens, Greece?

So, I’m planning a solo trip to Italy for my birthday but I’ve recently started doubting how much time I should spend in Naples. I’ve been to other cities in Italy like Rome and Florence, but this would be my first time in Naples.

My doubts started when I saw some people on this sub as well as some travel bloggers posting somewhat negative opinions of Naples as a travel destination. I’m curious to hear other people’s stories about the city to decide whether I want to spend more or less time there.

From a lot of the stories I’ve heard, Naples sounds a bit like Athens, which I’ve been to. It was super crowded and kind of dirty, but the people were nice and there’s plenty to do there. If anyone could confirm or refute this, I’d appreciate it, because I handled Athens perfectly fine and if they’re similar, I’m sure I could handle Naples as well. My main concerns are being harassed, as I’m a woman traveling by herself, or people trying to scam me or steal my stuff (I’ve heard pickpocketing is a huge problem in Naples).

The original reason I wanted to spend ~5 days in Naples is because it has a lot of historical/archaeological sites in close proximity as well as museums and such. History and archaeology are my passion, so that’s generally my main focus when I travel.

tl;dr - Is it worth it to stay in Naples for 5+ days? Is it anything like Athens, Greece? Please share any personal stories you have of time spent in Naples so I can better understand what it’s like and if I’d enjoy being there.
