Impromptu trip to Vietnam?

So I’m currently halfway on my two week solo trip in Thailand. I’ve been meeting folks in my hostels that have gushed about Vietnam and it’s getting me to think about pushing my flight back a week out of Bangkok so I can go to Vietnam for a week. Doing this would cost me an extra $500 USD (change flight charge + fare difference + round trip flight to Hanoi and back to Bangkok where I will fly back to the States).
The problem is that I haven’t done any research of what to do and where to go in Vietnam. I don’t know how I should plan my time, where to stay, what to do and it’s giving me anxiety cuz I don’t want to pay all that money and waste an opportunity to truly enjoy the experience of Vietnam.
Does anyone have advice on what I should do? I know I can always come back and visit Vietnam after I’ve done some research and planning, but the idea of challenging myself to do this spontaneously is exciting.
Edit: By advice I mean, should I go for this one week in Vietnam even though I haven’t researched anything (and pay the extra money to do so) or wait and come back to Vietnam for a longer period of time after I’ve done more research.
Edit2: This is my first solo trip, hence my apprehension about my lack of planning haha
