Helping out a local
During my travels and home life I’ve always been the person to hold up open doors or give a helping hand when needed. For me, it’s not about a reward but about “passing it forward” in the hopes that other people will do the same.
One story that I just thought of that I’d like to share comes from my time in Zagreb, Croatia. I was walking around one Sunday afternoon after going to Museums and saw this elderly woman struggling to get up stairs into a bank. She had a purse and a cane and therefore couldn’t hold onto the railing. To make matters worse, the way the door opened left very little room for her to even get in.
I walked up to her and gestured to her that I’d help her. Holding her hand/arm and moving the cane, I helped her walk up the stairs and open the door so she could easily get in. She didn’t speak a lick of English and I don’t speak anything but English and a bit of Spanish. But the way she talked to me (in Croatian), her big smile, and the hug at the end was all the thanks I needed. It honestly made my day more so then the museums and beautiful city.
Do you guys have any stories of helping someone out? It doesn’t matter if it’s a fellow traveler or local, I’d love to hear it!
