First solo trip. Where should I go?
I’ve gone on many backpacking/road trips with friends, but I’ve always wanted to travel alone. I’ll have 2-3 weeks this summer, at the end of June and beginning of July (flexible), so it seems like a good opportunity.
What’s a good destination for a first-timer? I’d prefer somewhere where English is widely spoken or understood, where being female or Jewish isn’t hazardous to one’s health, and ideally not overcrowded with other tourists.
As far as activities go, I’m mainly interested in amateur-level outdoorsy stuff—day hikes, kayaking, trail riding, maybe ziplines—but also exploring cities and towns, and the occasional historical/educational site. Ideally a place that photographs nicely, because I’m shallow like that. Was considering New Zealand, but the flight would eat my budget, and I’m not sure about the whole winter thing.
I live in the northeast U.S. and have never traveled alone internationally, but there’s a first time for everything. Budget is up to $1500 for a trip within North America, but ~$3000 or so if I go all out and leave the continent. Otherwise I’m pretty much open to anything. Hit me with your best.
