Birmingham, Al to Tuscon, AZ suggestions
Thinking of planning a road trip with my boyfriend out to Arizona to see some friends. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on places to stop. Or just general road trip advice. We're in our late 20s and early 30s, both decently outdoorsy and enjoy hiking and camping.
Some basic details we've hammered out so far: We're thinking of setting aside two weeks in late May, early June 2020 for this trip. Currently thinking of cutting a more southern route through Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico to get to Tuscon and then taking a more northern route home through Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennessee (we'd like to avoid Kansas. Sorry, but we've driven through it before and it was awful). We'll be car camping out of our Highlander so no need to stop at RV specific parks.
Some places that have been suggested to us so far are:
Carlsbad Cavern
White Sands National Park
Acoma Pueblo
Lake Powell
Antelope Canyon
Petrified Forest
Walnut Canyon
Mesa Verde
Ozarks
Capulin Volcano
Havasu Falls
Grand Canyon
Bryce Canyon
Wolf Creek Pass
Oak Creek Canyon
Red Rock State Park
Sunset Crater Volcano
Great Sand Dunes
Any suggestions on additional places to check out? Or places to avoid? We've done one road trip together with friends before to Denver, Co but we drove straight through the night. He's done a trip out to Colorado for climbing and snowboarding several times and I've road tripped down the east coast from Pennsylvania. We've also flown many places together. So we each have experience in dealing with the long hours in a car and traveling together in general but we've never tackled something on this scale. Particularly with stops in between the two main destinations (Birmingham, Al to Tuscon, Az and back). We're still in the early stages of planning this so all suggestions/tips are welcome! Thanks in advance!
