Big life changes - sudden huge urge to solo travel a bit before things kick off. Help?

So long story short, I got accepted into a prestigious nursing school and got a scholarship which guarantees near full ride. These were very important factors since I am from a "disadvantaged" background so I had almost no shot at these. I also got out of a decently long relationship recently and suddenly got the urge to travel a bit before the program kicks off this fall.

I want to visit Europe, and specifically so far I have Amsterdam in mind. I want to solo travel for about a week or so and celebrate my 21st birthday alone.

The problem is, I have NO CLUE how to go about doing this kind of stuff. I never traveled other than visiting family (Canada, Japan, China) and absolutely never traveled for fun or tourism, especially not alone.

From speaking with friends, they tell me I will probably be interested in a hostel and maybe visiting more than just Amsterdam by taking public transportation. Can anyone point me in the right directions to help me get started?

PS: I am thinking late July to early august, as I only have time between around July 10th till August 10th.
