Advice/suggestions for a first solo trip speaking only English? 33/F and happily inside my comfort zone

First time poster, long time lurker. I’m defending my PhD in July and I’m going to celebrate by disappearing for 4-6 weeks. I’ve never travelled alone before, so words of advice/encouragement are very much welcome.

I’m 33/f—a little older with a fair bit of money to burn, so I don’t mind paying a little extra for privacy and comfort. I’d be a solo female, so safety is a factor to consider. I’m also very self conscious when trying to communicate in not-English, so I was thinking I’d stick to English-speaking countries (until I can travel again with my husband, who is much better with this but cannot join me this time around).

1) Let’s assume this is a great idea. I love exploring both nature and city life, but sadly I hate driving and would love to be able to rely on public transit and/or Uber. Any suggestions on locale? I was thinking that I could stick to European countries, but any advice would be awesome.

2) Is anyone else in a similar boat that has gotten by with just English in not-so-obvious places? Or any tips with languages that are easier to work with? I know I’m probably missing out on a lot by putting such an artificial restriction on my travels, but I’m just really burnt out from my degree, and I’d rather not make my brain learn anything else new for awhile.

Words of support or to change my view? Thanks in advance!
