7 week EU Mediterranean Coastal Trip
Hey everyone,
(24M) I'm brainstorming travel plans for this coming summer and I'm blessed with the chance to get away for 7 weeks before medical school. I wanted to get a nice mix of hedonistic city pleasure with opportunities to see natural splendor nearby. The Mediterranean coastline of Spain, France, and Italy seems to be what I'm looking for.
First draft:
Spain;
Valencia -> Tarragona -> Barcelona (Been there before, not staying for long, willing to skip)
France;
Montpellier -> Marseille -> Nice
Italy; will deviate from the coast for some stops
Genoa -> Cinque Terre -> Florence -> Rome -> Naples -> ???
What I could really use some help with is finding lesser-known towns or small cities typically overshadowed by the major touristy ones I've listed so far. I want to weave in a small town or nature exploration 1-nighter or day-trips in between big cities as much as possible. As long as bus/train travel is more-or-less convenient, I'm game. Last summer I traveled through Spain and hit mostly big cities, and I regret not giving myself a chance to explore the less densely-populated regions. With the destinations I've listed so far, I guess I have about 15-20 days out of the 7 weeks to fill with non-big city destinations (avg 3-4 days per big city).
I don't presently have plans to rent a car so bus and metro will be my primary form of transportation. However if you strongly recommend a car rental for the type of journey I'm describing, by all means let me know! My budget won't be a major obstacle (planning to be one-third of one-million dollars in debt really soon anyway). I'm physically fit, so I welcome any recommendations for hikes or climbs along the way. My Spanish is solid, but I have no French or Italian language in me at the moment.
Thank you!
