Vietnam route as a first time backpacker.

Hello everyone! I am planning my first backpacking trip this summer. The rough dates that I'm planning are June 11th-July 23rd. I am a teacher and want to make the most out of my summer off.

My main question that I have is should I travel the whole country North to South or vice versa, or should I stay in the North and make a base camp out of Hanoi and travel to many different cities in the north instead? Would I be missing out on a lot if I didn't go to the South at all?

Every itinerary that I see online shows the entire country, but I don't know how much of the South appeals to me personally. I don't have a lot of interest in partying or spending time at beaches. I want to see as many nature areas, and cultural or religious areas as possible and try to embrace and learn as much of the culture as possible during the time.

If I were to do the entire country, I would do the typical tourist route.

If I stay in the North, I would fly to Hanoi, the travel by buses around the area to Sapa, Cat Ba Island, Bai Tu Long Bay or Ha Long Bay, Tam Coc, Phong Kha, and maybe make it as far South and Hue ( I have read about all of the historical sites to see there). I would like to stay at least 5-7 days in each area to really get enough time to see everything I want to see and just wander through the cities.

Also, how much should I book ahead of time? Being my first time backpacking anywhere, I like the idea of booking Hostels and Transportation ahead of time, but I don't know if it's necessary and I don't know if 12go.asia has all of the routes possible through it. It seems to go from one of the locations in the North to another that I would need to go back to Hanoi and then to another location from what I see on there. I don't want or need to have each day planned out by the hour, but I want to have at least a rough idea of what I'll be doing, especially for the sake of my family who will be worrying about me the entire time.

I appreciate all of the help that each of you can give me. I am super excited to go on my first trip, but don't want to ruin the whole trip somehow.
