Train travel in Western Europe - a little expensive for spontaneous travelers?
Is it just me, or are trains significantly cheaper in Western Europe when pre-booked weeks or even months in advance?
I noticed this in Germany, at least. I hear the same of true of Belgium. Netherlands, France and Spain (+probably Portugal)? Tickets seem to be available online months in advance and prices rise significantly once in short notice.
I looked at the Barcelona-Madrid train and it's like ~100 euro for April dates when booked at this point.
On the other hand, trains in Poland, Czech Republic & Hungary don't seem to be cheaper when booked way ahead of time; oftentimes, buying them online in advance makes no difference in price.
