tips for solo female traveler/first big road trip?
hi everyone, i appreciate any advice anyone can offer! i love this sub and am incredibly excited for this adventure.
i'm 20, live in CA and have never been out of the state. i do road trips up and down CA all the time and obviously it's a huge state so i'm no stranger to long stretches of driving, maximizing my mileage, and sleeping in my car for a night or two, but this summer i have a huge cross-country road trip planned to see family in both Florida and Minnesota as well as just get myself out there. been pretty lost in life lately, and hoping seeing more of the country will spark something in me. it's looking like i'll hit about 25 states right now! i'm not a huge camping or national parks person (but i will be visiting the grand canyon as its only a 6 hour drive from my starting point, kinda crazy ive never gone), so most of the trip will consist of various roadside attractions and lots of just driving-forever bouts. i'm cool with that, i love tiny churches, old graveyards, giant safety pins, shit like that. however, i'm on a major budget and have little to no experience with basically living in my car alone for such a long period of time. my questions are:
-as far as sleeping in my car in unfamiliar places goes (i have the budget for maybe one motel room a week and i'll have a few nights with the aforementioned family, grand majority will be nights in the car), as a young female are there any extra precautions i should take? is it safer to sleep in the front seat or back, etc? i have window covers and plan on utilizing walmarts and such, hopefully no seedy rest stops for longer than a power nap and smoke!
-i have my budget pretty tightly planned out (have enough in savings for bills at home, calculated gas, food, a few nights in motels/hostels and will have about $500 left after that.) but how much collateral should i plan on?
-other tips on minimizing spending?
-and any extra advice or words of encouragement you can offer. i am sure theres tons of stuff i haven't even thought about given that a trip this big is so new to me in basically every way.
thanks for reading! tldr safety, money, and general tips for a young gal on the road for 1-2 months
-oh and i'll be driving a 2015 Ford CMAX Energi. it has treated me very well so far even if i'm a bad hybrid owner and hardly ever use the charger lol (i do plan on bringing it of course.) but any car specific tips are appreciated as well since i am not exactly a mechanic haha.
