Suggestions/Tips and tricks for a year of travel? (Specifically in South and Central America)

Hi r/solotravel!

I'm not sure if it makes me extremely nauseous or extremely excited every time I talk about it, but I've been granted a year sabbatical from my job beginning this September. I want to go learn Spanish and travel in Central and South America. My extremely tentative plan is to hike the Cordillera Huayhuash trek first (as I seem to be of the understanding I should do it by the end of September) then do 4-6 weeks at Peruwayna Spanish school in Lima (if anyone as attended I would love to hear about your experience!). Take a break to hike the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu, and back for 4-6 of school. Hopefully this would take me to about Christmas time/early January, when a couple of friends would join me to go backpacking (the hiking kind) in Patagonia. I then plan to spend the rest of the time exploring the rest of the continent and Central America. Things I've started to investigate: sailing from Panama to Colombia (or vice versa), see the salt flats and bike the death road in Bolivia, hike a volcano, see Iguazu falls, visit Rainbow Mountain, go snorkeling and white water rafting somewhere grand. I would love to sneak over to Antartica and the Galapagos Islands, but I'm not sure if that's in the budget or not yet!

Any thoughts on must-sees? Things to skip? Tips and tricks?

Some things about me that may curb suggestions: female in my early 30's, and am definitely over the party phase. I'm a slightly nervous traveler, and although I'm always willing to roll with the punches, I would like to have a vague plan before I leave. I've traveled a fair amount, but not a ton (India, Italy, England, Paris, Egypt, and Colombia), some of it solo, some with a tour group, some with friends. I've seen some of Colombia with a Colombian friend (Bogota, Cartagena, Pereira, Tyrona Park, Leticia) and would be interested in seeing Medellin and going back to Bogota to visit her family. I love hiking and outdoorsy things, but am well aware I would probably be safest doing this with a guide/group.

I've been reading lots of posts from you all about your travels and would love to add to my bag of things to be excited about to help curb my case of the nerves! Thanks you lovely Redditors!
