Solo travel in the US - Road trip to New Orleans
Hello all!
I have been lurking the sub for a while now, but with a trip coming around decided to make my first post to ask for some advice. As i imagine there are plenty of US natives here, hopefully i can get plenty of help as well!.
I'm Brazilian, and i'll be taking a trip from Brazil (Probably leaving from São Paulo, so that's like a 10 hour flight!) to Orlando, FL, to visit some family that's currently living there. During my time in Florida, though, i'm thinking of running away from all the family reunion crazy to take a quick solo trip, from Orlando to New Orleans.
Now, of course i have done some research, but i noticed that not a lot of things i have found online seem to be made for young people, solo travelers, or even non-US natives. Also, i would love to hear the opinion of the sub!
I have only heard great things about the city from all the US natives i have met while abroad, so i'm very excited to go visit it, but i'm worried that i may have a few wrong ideas about the place.
First of all, timing: I'm thinking i'll probably be going to the US around December 2019 or January 2020, maybe even spending Christmas and New Years there. Not sure how long i will be staying yet, but i'm planning to spend at least two days in Orleans. Considering it will be the between December and January, is this a good time to visit? Or should i plan to go there some other time?
Second, the means of travel: I always wanted to take a road trip in the US, and from what i've seen it's pretty doable from Orlando to Orleans. Where should i get the car though? Rent it at the airport? Somewhere else? Is it not a good idea to take the road at all?
Also, if it is a good idea to make it a road trip, what are some places along the way/close that i should see as well?
And finally, what should i do in New Orleans? With a limited time window, i was thinking about experiencing all i could in terms of cultural experiences, as well as some good (not fancy or expensive, just good) food. Also would like to see some of the city's night life! What are some of the places i have to see and visit?
