Rome and Florence, day trips and surrounding areas?
Last week of April into May I have 9 nights. Was thinking of doing 5 in Florence, 4 in Rome. Might fit a city or two nearby into this as well. It’s my second time to both and my seventh time in Italy. I’m comfortable with the language and getting around.
What I have planned so far is land in Rome, head to Florence and check into my hostel Gallo d’Oro for 3 nights. Thinking of just winging it from there. Has anyone wandered outside of Florence? (or Rome!) What’s worth seeing in Tuscany-Lazio regions? I’m not opposed to finding a little farm, winery, or agriturismo to stay and relax/help out at. I won’t be renting a car so it’s train only. I was wondering if Lucca/Siena/? can be done in a day or if that’s too much travel time. More worth it to stay the night? Less rushed? Lucca looks really neat and Siena is always recommended. But I only saw regionale trains going there from Florence. I try not to spend too much time on a train.
I’m really just interested in finding good food and improving my Italian. Trying to break away from my old ways of traveling where I just wander all day getting progressively drunker off spritz and Ichnusa. If there are volunteering opportunities or ways to get involved with the local community I’m all ears. Just a mid 20s Midwesterner who fell in love with Italy a few years ago.
