Is it weird to not meet many people while you travel alone?
I'm 28 years old and I have been solo traveling since I was 23. I've visited Malaysia, Hungary, Germany, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Australia alone. However, I feel like I've solo traveled wrong because I haven't met many people abroad.
I am a heavily introverted guy who is also very shy, which doesn't help. It's not like I've met nobody at all on my trips, but I would say 80-90% of my time abroad has been spent literally alone, wandering around new cities, taking in the sights and smells, trying new food etc.
When I do meet someone, it is very frequently a one on one conversation over a few drinks, perhaps at a bar or in the hostel lobby.
In Budapest, for example, I stayed at a popular party hostel in the city for 5 nights back in December 2017. I think I joined in the conversation with others and went out partying on just two of those nights. During the daytime for every single day, I explored the city completely alone.
I also only bothered to join in with the partying once everyone had finished those party games that you see in many hostels, like spin the bottle or "never have I ever". I feel awkward playing them because of shyness and because they feel like forced fun.
The reason I feel like I've been doing solo travel wrong is that so many people who travel alone look like they all have really amazing trips, meeting loads of people in these party hostel atmospheres.
Sometimes it's just too much social stimulation for me to join in with the fun in a busy hostel and I therefore don't meet many people at all while I'm abroad alone.
Is it strange to travel alone and not meet many people? Have I wasted a lot of experiences in different places? Many people have said it was brave of me to travel alone despite my shyness/social anxiety, but I dunno how brave I was if I didn't interact with lots of people. Thanks for any advice or input.
