7-Day Road Trip from Des Moines to Arizona--Advice
Leaving from Des Moines the night of 9/23/19 and coming back to Des Moines 10/01/19 – going with my best friend
Planning to stay somewhere halfway for 1 night both ways so we’re not driving 20+ hours straight. So roughly 4 days/3 nights in Arizona
This would be our first road trip and have never traveled down to the southwest, which is why we want to go explore. One spot we really want to hit is Sedona for the energy vortexes. We’re interested in hiking, sight-seeing, horse-back riding, possibly sky diving and/or white river rafting as well. Really depends on our budget, which we haven’t set one yet, so to be safe let’s say ~$800 per person. We’re not interested in camping so we’re looking into Airbnb spots, nothing too fancy.
So my questions are….
What are good spots to stay for the 1 night halfway to and from Arizona from Des Moines? For example, we could start off from Des Moines and take I-40 then stop somewhere in Texas for the night. What are some spots along the interstate in Texas to stay at? We’d like to explore the area for a couple hours and then get some sleep before we head out again. Then maybe on the way back we could take US-160 back to Des Moines from Arizona and stop somewhere in Utah or Colorado along the highway there for a night (we’d like to stop at the Four Corners Monument). This is just me looking at the maps and seeing how we could travel and ideas on where to stop.
How many nights would be enough in Sedona? Where else in Arizona would be an interesting destination if there’s somewhere else we could stay at for another night if 3 nights in Sedona is too much?
We really have no specific itinerary other than wanting to visit the above places. I don’t know much about the southwest and am open to any suggestions. I’ve checked TripAdvisor and other websites but it becomes overwhelming planning an itinerary so I’m also open to advice on that as well.
