3rd time in Japan, doing it a bit differently.

The past two times I visited Japan, I did what most tourists do and bought the rail pass for a significant chunk of time and got around that way. This time I am visiting for just shy of 3 weeks.

This time I have use of a rather nice car, for one week in April, and a couple of days prior to that. I’m spending my first week in Tokyo, and travelling out a couple of those days to certain attractions with a friend using a car(suggestions welcome). Then I head out on my own with a car for a week, and am thinking of doing a circuit North, as far or further than Yamagata prefecture. Looking at suggestions on how far I should travel in a week (I am used to driving long distances and will enjoy the scenery, however obviously don’t want to be driving the whole time) and what cool landmarks I could visit on the way. Looking for the less touristy stuff. Maybe natural attractions or places with significant history or cultural meaning.

The last week or less I will probably use a rail pass to see as much South West of Tokyo as I can. Probably going at least as far as Hiroshima. Again, any suggestions welcome there, bearing in mind public transport only.

I’ve got a fantastic camera with all sorts of lenses, including telephoto, wide angle, and others, so this trip will be fairly photo centric. Would love to get some cool wildlife or bird shots... maybe even some monkeys

I am used to highly active holidays and expect to come home exhausted! Thanks in advance for any advice!
