Your favorite places to sit and soak it all in

Hello, solo travelers!

One of the things I most often regret about my travels is how rarely I sit and "soak in" my surroundings, so I've been making more of an effort to slow down and stop moving occasionally.

I thought it might be fun to share some of the places we've enjoyed just "being", or the places we've regretted not taking the time to let them wash over us. I'll start!

  • The Empty Quarter, UAE: I don't think I've ever been somewhere quite so isolated and different from my regular surroundings. I spent hours sitting on top of dunes with no signs of civilization in any direction, listening to the wind.
  • Skye, Scotland: It's hard to not sit still and let Skye soak in -- you're surrounded by natural beauty and there's not much else to do but take it in.
  • Local trains in Japan: The Skinkansen is nice and all, but there's something incredibly soothing about jumping on a smaller line and riding off into the suburbs with their charming little stations and crossings.
  • Isafjordur, Iceland: This is one of my regrets. My only trip to Iceland (so far) was a bit of a whirlwind, and separate concerns kept me busy and distracted from the amazing, stark environments I was moving through and from noticing the charming lives of the local people.
  • Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo, Costa Rica: Similar to my Iceland experience, I didn't take the time to really exist in this gorgeous park. I remember driving by little valleys and thinking "shoot, I should stop and look around down there" and then...not doing that.

Whatcha got? What are your favorite places to sit and "be"?
