Bangladesh: Sri Lanka not safe Sri Lanka not safe - Bangladesh

Sri Lanka not safe

So, recently while traveling through Asia decided to goto Sri Lanka - what a mistake!

So arrived in Negombo which was a run down little town with over priced beach resorts - 3 and 4 star hotels are not to International standards. I stayed here because it was in close proximity to the airport and I needed a place to sleep after my late night arrival. Going further these hotels do not have any concept of the value of the pound or dollar because they are way too over priced. To add, Sri Lankan’s must believe that because you are white, or western that you have an endless supply of cash. Next, Tuk Tuk drivers: beware ESPECIALLY in Colombo. For me, I had an awful experience. I was enruote to the train station (was heading to Kandy) i thought my Tuk Tuk must’ve had a death wish and just dropped me off in the middle of nowhere because of the road construction. Still I persevered, I wanted to catch my train to Kandy ( the primary reason I came to Sri Lanka was to see the interior region ) I took yet another Tuk Tuks, one was pulled over because he had no license or meter. Side note ~ I believe it’s something like 40~ Rb a kilometer. Finally I waved down an older gentleman, at which point I had missed my 10:30 train and had to turn back to my original destination. His Tuk Tuk was metered and he was not aggressive and drove me back to the original hotel. I changed my course of action and the hotel booked me a shuttle to Galle which cost 50 USD. I stayed in Galle which was in general a very pleasurable experience. The area has plenty of history and is remarkably preserved, though it’s not exempt from the horrors of Sri Lanka, for females travlers be wary of predatory behavior here - exercise caution! Then I headed to Unawattuna then Mirissa. Mirissa had a nice beach, but at that point I was so fed up with Tuk Tuk drivers and the disappointment of the accommodations that I didn’t fully enjoy what the area had to offer. The local food was satisfying and the southern province has lovely beaches, still coming to Sri Lanka couldn’t of been a bigger mistake. For me, as a solo female traveler and experience a lot of aggression and pushy people in Sri Lanka, it’s over priced with the exception of the food. I stayed in the Southern province basically the whole time —and experienced over priced hotels, unwanted male attention, reckless Tuk Tuk drivers. Oh and the whale watching excursion horrified me. The boats gauge 50 bucks a pop for a far sighted view of maybe one whale breaching. I want to end with the potential of taking their ‘scenic train’ consider a rickety train ride from Colombo to Kandy or vice versa —sitting on the floor form 5-6 hours with no restroom facilities.

Lonely Planet had nerve calling it 2019 destination for travel. This country was just in a civil war. I really believe people should know what Sri Lanka I’d truly about.
