Hypothetical example: I have a US passport. I fly from USA to Berlin. If they ask me for proof of onward travel - which I know they might not, and that this policy varies on country or on the mood of your customs agent - would I need to present a ticket back to the USA, or would a one-way ticket to a 3rd country (ex. Morocco) suffice?

This is one ambiguity that I am just not sure of. Does proof of onward travel = proof of return to your country of origin?
