Planning a solo trip around some rural areas, need some advice (US)

I've been wanting to see some of the rural areas and camp around the US for a while now. Being born in NYC and pretty much having spent my whole life around big cities, I feel like I'm missing out on quite a bit.

My plan was Kentucky (Eastern Kentucky) for a week while camping for at least a day or two and then Alabama for another week before catching a flight back to New York.

I have some questions regarding the whole process.

  1. How much money should I have on hand?
  2. Should I rent a car or stick to public transport?
  3. Motels or airbnb while not camping?

Also, any ideas are appreciated. I'm not time limited nor money limited so I'm open to suggestions around those areas. I wouldn't mind adding another location to the trip.
