Is the Dempster really that bad?
I’m heading up north (Yukon, NWT, Alaska) for an extended road trip in June. It’s not my first time travelling in that region, but I’ve never driven the Dempster Highway and am seriously considering it this time. Ideally, I’d like to drive the whole thing, including the new ITH to Tuktoyaktuk. I’ll be driving a newer, all-wheel drive SUV, with 20” M+S tires.
When I bought my first Milepost back in 2007, the writers strongly recommended bringing two full-size spares for the journey, because the road was so hard on tires. Fair enough. When I bought a 2018 copy of the Milepost last year, I was a bit surprised to find that they are still recommending bringing two full-size spares. I had read several traveller anecdotes on TripAdvisor describing easy trips, in regular sedans, with no flat tires, so it seemed odd that two spares are still being recommended.
Has anyone travelled the Dempster in the last year or two? If so, what are your thoughts? Could one get away with one full-size spare and the bagel spare?
