How does my plan for my first ever trip to Thailand look? Suggestions/Tips Appreciated!
Hello. Sorry in advance if I’m doing something wrong (I’ll fix it).
I’m looking for some suggestions/help for my first ever trip to Thailand and my first ever solo trip to Southeast Asia.
Basic Information:
US Citizen
28M
Flying from LAX
Interests: Wildlife, SCUBA diving, nice (preferably not crowded) beaches, visiting temples, great food.
Budget: About $25k on the ground + $6k for flights (but hopefully I’ll only have to spend part of that $6k)
Experience: I’ve been to 71 countries, 8 solo.
When: April
I am planning to fly LAX-ICN-BKK on Korean, which looks to be just shy of $5k but maybe it will drop. I see flights for $2-3k but they are all on not very good Chinese airlines. I’d rather stick with KE or CX (but CX is twice the price as KE).
I’m looking at 5 days in Bangkok, 10 days split between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, 4 days on Koh Samui and 4 days in Phuket. I could extend the trip up to another 4ish days so if anyone has suggestions as to where in the country I could spend that time that would be great.
A factor in my planning for this trip is that I have $20,000 in Four Seasons gift cards I received as a gift at Christmas (not included in the $25k budget I gave). I am looking at 2 (should I do 3??) nights at Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle ($9.6k for 2 nights). 5 nights at Four Seasons Chiang Mai ($7.1k for 5 nights), and 3 nights at Four Seasons Koh Samui ($7.9k for 3 nights). The gift cards will cover most of the costs for accommodations in the 3 locations, so the rest of my budget will be for Bangkok, Phuket, activities/food, wherever else I may decide to go for the last few days and whatever my Four Seasons costs are above $20k.
For Bangkok I am choosing between The Siam, Peninsula, and Mandarin Oriental hotels. For Phuket I am undecided, but if anyone has suggestions that would be great.
One expense I know for sure right now is I want to go for dinner at Gaggan in Bangkok. Has anyone been? It’s legendary in the food world. I believe I can get a reservation through my hotel, but I’ll be sure to make sure with the hotel when I book. Any other restaurants or bars or food stalls/markets you would recommend that are somewhat central?
I know I fly from Bangkok to Phuket (on a 747) and from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, but what are the best ways to get to Koh Samui (from Bangkok) and Chiang Rai (from Chiang Mai)?
Also, any important things to know about customs in Thailand? I’ve been to Vietnam and Indonesia so I’m not completely foreign to Southeast Asia but I’ve never been solo in the region and I’ve never been to Thailand so any specific tips (safety or otherwise) are appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.
