Best (Cheapest?) Route from Helsinki->St. Petersburg->Tallinn? [American]
Hello All!
I booked a one-way ticket to Helsinki and a one-way ticket back home from Vilnius for late next month, and I really want to see St. Petersburg. The way I see it, I have two options:
- Get a visa ($90) and go overland to St. Pete then to Tallinn, whether by bus or train. THe visa process, I hear, is kind of long, and depending on politics I may not even get one. Not to mention I may not get one in time, as I hear they take up to 1 or 2 months to process sometimes. THe upshot is I live near the NYC consulate so as soon as I get my renewed passport I can apply same day.
- Book a "cruise." Apparently, if you go via ship and book a tour, you can go to St. Petersburg visa free for up to 3 days. The downside is this might be expensive, upside is I don't have to worry for a visa.
Does anyone have experience with either process? I wouldn't want to stay in St. Petersburg for more than 2 or 3 days, so is the cruise a good option? Also if I am traveling in mid/ late March, will it be hard to find a cruise that's running, if the weather's bad? Any tips are much appreciated!
