Advice on personal protection/utility items when traveling?
Hey r/solotravel!
I'm one of those guys that always has a pocketknife on them in the USA. I suppose it could be used for personal protection, but it's never come down to that and I almost always use it as a utility item that I find extremely useful. However, it's one of the few items that you cannot bring on a plane (I never check luggage, so we're talking about carry-on).
I realize that it's entirely dependent on the laws of the country that you go to (being caught with a large pocketknife in Saudi Arabia may be worse than Italy, etc), but in general how do you deal with personal protection/utility items that you can't bring with you?
It's not really worth it to ship them internationally, but is it also taking too big a risk to buy some knife or utility item in a random marketplace/store?
I'd like to hear your stories/experiences on this.
Thanks!
