Tips for keeping the car organized when you sleep in it every night?
I will be embarking on a cross-country US road trip in a few months, from Massachusetts to Nevada. I’ll have my dog with me, and I’ll be driving my Subaru Crosstrek. To save some money, I’m planning on sleeping in the car as much as possible, with motels thrown in every few nights for a shower (and when I can find reasonably priced dog-friendly ones). This will be by far the biggest road trip I’ve taken. I have no problem travelling alone, but I’m a little anxious about having the dog with me with no help--I won’t be able to go inside most establishments for more than 5 minutes if I leave her in the car. This means I will be in my car (or outdoors) for the ENTIRE journey.
On all the road trips I’ve taken in the past, the car always seems to get messy after just one day of driving. I’m not talking about trash--I always keep a trash bag and empty it whenever I stop. But I always seem to take out supplies and leave them around, and quickly the car is a disaster.
I was wondering if any of you have any tips for keeping the car organized? I’d love to keep a “bed” area set up in the back, since the dog prefers to sleep in my sleeping bag with the seats folded down while I drive. The back of the car is wide enough for two people and the dog, but this time it’ll just be me. I’m imagining setting up storage bins along the side of the “bed” area to store my stuff. Packing cubes work great for keeping clothing organized, but the rest of my odds and ends tend to get jumbled. Give me all your organization hacks!
