Thoughts for 40-something solo travel?

As a 40-something solo traveler, I'm curious if there are others out there too? What opportunities do you see for meeting other travelers while on the road? Hostels seem to be so set up for younger adults - and I'm not against younger adults or anything, but it's probably just not my scene.

I'm fairly introverted so am not the type to just drop into a bar and make new friends. Although I enjoy solo travel, it can get lonely to be ALONE for several weeks.

I have had the opportunity to join workshop/camp events while traveling and it's nice to have an instant social "home" for a while, without being committed to the itinerary of an actual group tour. But anything else come to mind?
