The US Government Shutdown And Your Travel Plans
To many outside the USA (and probably a lot within) many of us are confused as to what the shutdown is.
Explain Like I Am Five has a great explanation!
So, now that you understand what the shutdown is you're probably wondering how it will affect your trip.
Well, no one is sure.
There have been reports of TSA officials walking off the job or called in "sick", incredibly long lineups, and huge delays. There has also been reports of everything being fine.
The best bet is to try calling the airport and asking what the wait time is. To be on the safe side show up way earlier than normal.
But once I'm in the USA I'll be fine, right?
Generally speaking, yes. Day to day life continues as usual for the average citizen.
However, any government run sites are affected by the shutdown.
National parks are open but without facilities. Smithsonian museums and National Zoo are closed.
If you are applying for a visa or other travel documentation there may be delays.
In short, no one knows exactly how the shutdown will affect you personally.
We welcome anyone's stories of traveling during the shut down but we will remove (or ban) any politcal comments. This is not the place to discuss USA politics!

EDIT: Seems Trump has agreed to reopen the government.

We'll leave this post up until it seems things have settled down.
