Safe options for accommodation for solo travelers?
Earlier this year, I embarked on my first solo trip around Europe. I was living in NYC at the time. Even though I loved the city, I desperately needed a change from my job, environment, everything. So I sold/gave away everything that wouldn't fit in a couple suitcases and took off! I started in Prague and stayed for a month, then made my way through Amsterdam, Porto, Madrid, and Barcelona. Maybe I'll share my complete story in another post, but long story short, it was the most incredible time of my life!
With that said...there were some stressful parts, mainly regarding who I stayed with and where. I used Airbnb in each destination. For the most part, everything worked out fine, but I occasionally felt myself getting stressed thinking about the fact that I had no idea who I was sharing the home with. Some homes were very large, set up like hotels where people were in and out every day. Others were just me and the host. Maybe it was just because I had never done and Airbnb before, but I wanted more control and knowledge about who my hosts and housemates were.
That made me think about how we typically look for roommates for our more permanent homes. Whether you find them through Facebook groups or an app, you're able to learn more about the person before sharing a space with them. Using roommates as we travel would cut costs in half and create a safer environment because you would know more about the person. What do you think? Do you think it would be useful to search for possible roommates, learn more about them, and share a space with that person instead of a random who happened to book the same Airbnb?
