Relaxation Vacation Solo?

Hi all,

I've been thinking lately that it would be nice to get away and just take a laptop and some books and spend a vacation chilling out somewhere sunny, but I'm not really interested in doing a spa or resort sort of experience (or what I picture those experiences would be) of there being a large staff hovering around waiting for me to need something. I'm not comfortable with my body, so the idea of sitting poolside while servers gawk at me, or traditional spa activities like massages or saunas is NOT my idea of a relaxing time.

I know it doesn't make for as interesting a trip as ones where you're doing cool things and seeing the sights, but has anyone done something like this? Or in general, just curious for thoughts. Where would you go? Any thoughts on good alternatives to the spa/resort scenarios I'm picturing?

Edits as requested:

Budget: I'd be starting looking in the $2000 range. Could probably go up to $5000 if I felt like it was something that would be a perfect fit and something particularly memorable.

Interests: Since I'd mainly be looking to "stay in", not sure if my day-to-day interests are of note? My ideal spot would be someplace with hotel rooms that were more comfortable and "pampered"-feeling than your average chain hotel, and it would be perfect if it had a private seating area/pool-space with a memorable view. Reliable wifi would be important, and ease of access to area restaurants and some evening entertainment options would be a plus. I'm a big theater buff, so it there was that sort of entertainment available (not necessarily Broadway levels, but shows of some sort), I guess that would be nice?
