Narrowing down destinations for 3 weeks in Europe in June
Hello everyone! First time poster here (22F, American) looking for itinerary advice for my first solo trip in June before starting medical school. Mainly looking for advice because while my flights are into Madrid and out of London (Gatwick), I'm interested in destinations that I know don't fit so neatly with those locations and it's caused me a bit of trouble in filling my itinerary.
- Cities I definitely want to visit: Paris, Berlin (have extended family + fam history in Berlin so probably my highest priority destination), Budapest
- Considering: A second destination in Spain (Bilbao/San Sebastian, or flying from Madrid to Mallorca before flying to Paris), Amsterdam, Prague
Is it worth trying to fit in an extra destination? I do realize that I'd only be able to add 1-2 at most and it would be a very fast moving trip.
The rough path I'm working with is 1-2 nights in Madrid (to a second destination in Spain?) to Paris (to Amsterdam?) to Berlin (to Prague?) to Budapest, then fly to London. Or, Spain to Budapest and follow that path in reverse order to take the train from Paris to London at the end.
Other considerations
- Budget: ~$3300
- Interested in great food/coffee/beer, chances to be active on a budget (surfing in San Sebastian?, also partly why I've got my eye on Amsterdam -- actually fits a bit between Paris and Berlin and a bikeable city), and historical sites
- I've been to Spain before (though not Basque country), which is why I'm not really interested in spending more time in the country.
- I realize that I'm jumping around quite a bit and these destinations would be ideally split into separate trips, but with med school ahead of me I know I can't anticipate much time to devote to travel in the near future so I feel a bit pressured with this trip haha
- Would I be crazy to spend 2 days or less in London? The city isn't high priority for me and a longer trip would eat up time in my itinerary; but as I'm flying out of Gatwick, I'm wondering whether I might regret not spending more time there.
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. This sub has been so helpful in finding hostels in which I'd be interested in staying and activities in the three cities I'm set upon; now I just need a bit of guidance in being realistic with this trip.
