Is it hard to meet fellow foreigners in Southeast Asia if you only stay in Airbnbs?
I am leaving for a six week trip to Southeast Asia (arriving in Bangkok and departing from Ho Chi Minh) in a week and have a few concerns. I recently took my first solo trip for 3 weeks in the Yucatan and had a great time overall. I split my time between two hostels (one with private room and other was dorm style) and an Airbnb. I loved how easy it was to meet fellow travelers in the hostels, but the endless noise made it nearly impossible to get any sleep. I have a chronic sleep disorder that can even make it difficult to sleep with complete silence. I tried earplugs, white noise, and sleep aids while staying at the hostels but nothing was that effective. My experience in the Airbnb was much better. I never had issues with noise at night so I got much better sleep. I was even able to befriend the host and some other travelers and locals that were living in the same apartment building. This probably would've been impossible if I wasn't nearly fluent in Spanish.
Unfortunately, opportunities like that wont pop up in SEA because I don't know any of the local languages, so I'll mostly have to make friends with fellow travelers. Hostels seem to be the best place to meet travels so I'm worried that I'll miss out on those connections if I stay in an Airbnb.
Does anyone here who stays in Airbnbs have any advice on how I can still connect with people and find friends? (By friend, I just mean someone you'd hang out with, go on excursions with, or go out drinking with. I know these "friends" will be constantly coming and going, but I'm just hoping that I'm not missing out on spending time with fellow foreigners around my age if I do choose to stick with Airbnb.
