First solo trip, starting in Buenos Aires

I'm a 31 year old guy from Northern Ireland who travelled Europe with a University friend in my early twenties but have never solo travelled before. I had a very well paid career between 24-31 but hated my job. I've made plenty of money so I quit a couple of months ago, have just enjoyed Christmas with my family back home (I was living in London) and am now planning to go and travel.

I fly to Buenos Aires on the 22nd (2 weeks today) and my rough plan is as follows;

Couple of weeks in Buenos Aires, then travel to Uruguay (any suggestions of where to stay while there are most welcome, I have no plans at the moment)

From Uruguay I was going to travel to Brazil and was planning to hit Sao Paulo and Rio. Again, this plan has just been made by looking at a map and seeing the proximity to Buenos Aires, Uruguay and the fact that the 2 cities I have heard most about in Brazil happen to all be very close.

I was then going to fly from Brazil to Chile. Chile to Peru, Peru to Columbia. At that point I'm not sure whether to travel through Costa Rica, Panama etc through Mexico to NA, or go to Cuba and in to Miami. But either way I want to spend some time in NA (never been) before flying to New Zealand, then doing Asia (again, no definitive plans as yet, but want to hit Thailand, South Korea and Japan at some point), before finishing in India and flying home from there.

First thing - I was looking at hotels in Buenos Aires and they looked pretty rough. I looked at Air BnB and you could get a really nice apartment for the same sort of money. Having scanned a few places on this site it seems pretty worldwide and most likely will be what I will use for accommodation for most, if not all of my trip. Is there any downside to this, or any hidden traps from experienced users of the site? I've booked my first stay in Buenos Aires and it was easy to use, but I've never stayed Air BnB before.

I'm not necessarily against hostels (used them exclusively on my Europe travels), however the apartments available where surprisingly well priced and well within my budget, so that was my logic in choosing this route, at least in South America.

I plan to keep all of my valuables (passport, wallet etc) in my apartment while I am out and about and just keep a small amount of cash on me, so if I'm robbed or pickpocketed they can't get much. Any other tips in this respect? I just read on the comments on a post from a dude who was robbed in Tanzania that Buenos Aires is actually full of scammers and thieves!

Any general travel tips and advice on where to go (especially on the first part of my trip in South America, as I won't be hitting Asia etc for quite some time) would be most welcome. I only plan to use flights for long journeys, how is public transport in this part of the world - is it easy to travel from Buenos Aires to Uruguay for example?

Apologies for the long post - I have so many questions! Thanks in advance for any advice, I'm sure to be using this sub quite frequently in the coming months!
