Any recommendations for a dog/puppies first road trip?

I love taking road trips! This summer I went on a 5000 mile road trip up through Utah, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and California and loved it. One thing I didn't love was feeling unsafe when I camped in non-state parks or other sparkly populated campsites since I'm a solo female.

A few months ago I picked up a lab puppy with the intent that he would be my travel/hiking buddy. Well I'm started to plan a road trip for this summer but now I'm nervous about taking him along.

I'll be leaving from Las Vegas, and I know that one of my most important destinations is going to be the National Bison Range. Not sure where to go from there. Does anyone have any advice planning a road trip with a dog? He'll be around 10-12 months during the summer when I'm planning on leaving. Ideally the road trip will be around 1-2 weeks and I'll likely stay around Montana while maybe going into the bordering states.
