Any advice for 6 weeks in Taiwan & Thailand before I book?
Hey /r/solotravel, I'm planning to travel 6 weeks in Asia in March/April. I'd like to spend approximately 3 weeks in Taiwan, and 3 weeks in Thailand.
Some background info: I'm a 30M Taiwanese-American, born and raised in US. I've visited Taipei, parts of Yilan, and Toroko Gorge in the past, but it was always with family. My Mandarin is at sub-par Chinglish levels (e.g. can barely converse with grandma) and I can understand more than I can speak. I am illiterate.
What I'm looking for: I'm pretty open to any experiences, including night-life, natural and man-made attractions, scenic views, street food, etc. In general I'm less interested in pure leisure.
Here are my questions:

Is 3 weeks too long to spend in Taiwan for solotravel? My rough plan is to visit the main attractions (night markets, Elephant mountain, Jiufen, Kenting) but I'm not really sure how to distribute my time over 3 weeks, as most of the other posts I've seen have been <10 days.

I don't plan on renting a scooter. Is it easy to make my way around Taiwan? How accessible is the hostel scene in outside of Taipei?

Can anyone shed some light on what the solo-traveler social scene is like in Taiwan? I know Thailand has a huge culture of it, but I'd like to meet fellow travelers in Taiwan.

If I spend 3 weeks in Thailand, will that be enough time if I wanted to briefly visit adjacent countries, like Laos or Cambodia?

I'm planning on using a travel agent to organize my flight path: US > Taipei > BKK > US. Are there tried and true methods other than a travel agent to avoid redundancy in flights?
