Advice asked for US west coast car rental

Hi Reddit! First post here from a lurking Redditor based in the Netherlands :)

I'm currently planning a road trip along the US west coast with a friend, roughly from San Diego to Vancouver and taking dips away from the coast to visit all the major parks, from the beginning of April to mid July. Renting a car seems to be the biggest hurdle as the prices are quite steep, to say the least. I'm hoping to get some advice on how to get the best deal so we'll have more spending money for other cool things (our budget for the whole trip including flight tickets is roughly $7000 per person). I've tried many different websites, and the cheapest I've seen was about $3850 (roughly $37 per day). This seems excessive, especially as I've read about people paying as little as $20 to $25 per day for their car rental. Wouldn't you expect a longer rental to be cheaper per day?

We're flying in from Cancun, where the first weeks of our trip will take us, but haven't booked our flight to the Land of the Free yet. Therefore, we don't mind whether the rental starts in San Diego or Los Angeles or even Las Vegas, if that's what it takes to save us a few hundred bucks. Neither would we mind returning the car while crossing the USA border to pick up a new rental in Canada (we'd like to spend the last few weeks around Banff). Problem is that we don't know the ins and outs of influences on price in car rentals. Could anyone help point us towards a good deal? :) Thanks a bunch!

Some details: 2 drivers (ages 25 and 27), roughly April 1st up to July 16th, from LA area to Vancouver (or Seattle) area
