9 days in Mexico - Oaxaca vs Chiapas
Scored a cheap RT flight to Mexico City this Feb; will be in the country from the 3rd to the 18th. My plan is to spend four days in Mexico City and then take a night bus to another destination where I'll spend 5 days with another 3 at a beach destination nearby, after which I fly back to CDMX.
My general plan for Oaxaca was to check out Monte Alban, Mitla, Yagul, and Hierve el Agua, do some hiking, perhaps through Latuvi (recommended to my by a friend who did a long weekend trip there from San Fran), take a Zapotec cooking class, and do a mezcal tasting. After a few days there, I was planning on taking an AeroTucan flight to Huatulco and transferring to Mazunte. Aside from a whole lot of nothing, was hoping to check out the Turtle Conservation Centre and Laguna Ventanilla.
If, instead, I went to Chiapas, my itinerary would end up more structured: after 2-3 days in San Cris, including visits to Chamula and Zinacantan and a day trip to El Chiflon, I'd take the night bus up to Palenque. After a day there and another day trip to Bonampak and Yaxchilan, I was planning on bussing to Chetumal overnight, after which I'd transfer to Bacalar for the remaining 3 days, potentially including a day trip to Calakmul.
The only major caveats for the second itinerary that I see are that I do a lot of running around. I'm also not sure how the route from Palenque to Chetumal is at night.
I'm finding this to be a surprisingly hard decision to make; any help at all would be much appreciated, /r/solotravel!
