2-3 weeks in SEA
For context, I am a 24 year old American woman with a fairly flexible, but relatively small, budget. I like to keep my daily spending and accommodation expenses as low as possible. I will be going on a three month trip to Southeast Asia beginning in February. The first two months will be spent in the Philippines and Bali, with a friend. The last month I will be traveling abroad alone for the first time. I have not planned this leg of my trip yet and I think I keep putting it off because I’m so nervous to be traveling alone. Don’t get me wrong, traveling solo is something I’ve always wanted to do and I am overwhelmingly excited to have that experience under my belt. However, I am struggling to decide where to spend this time. I think I want to spend anywhere from a week to two weeks in Northern Thailand, it is a place I have visited before and believe I will be comfortable navigating alone. But my last two weeks, I am unsure. I do have dietary restrictions that may limit my possibilities (strictly vegan for allergies). After doing as much research as I possibly can, I think I’ve narrowed it down to three countries: Vietnam, Laos, and Malaysian Borneo. Is two weeks enough time to dedicate to these countries? Are they safe for a very small (street-smart) woman to travel alone? Vietnam is a place I’m extremely passionate about visiting and I’m afraid to limit myself with that time constraint. I’m also slightly afraid of visiting Laos by myself due to the presence of the thousands of American bombs that injure and kill people every day. I’m also afraid of the terrorism that has plagued the northern islands of Borneo. I feel like a lot of my fears are irrational and I also feel they are keeping me from making a final decision. If anyone has any opinions, experiences, insights, or criticisms to share, I would greatly appreciate them. Many thanks and safest travels to you all!
TL;DR: I have roughly two weeks to travel SEA alone. I am a 5’2” vegan woman from the US. Should I go to Vietnam, Laos, Malaysian Borneo, or somewhere else?
