Solo travel in India for woman

Hi. For the last 3 years I have a hidden dream to travel to India, alone with my camera, hoping to visit as much provinces as possible, and especially Kashmir. I don’t know how long I want or need to stay in India, but I think definitely more than one month.

I am a 25yo woman from Europe (looking like Spanish or Middle-Eastern), and I have a fear because of the news that India is not safe especially for woman (danger of being raped and murdered). Of course, I understand that India is huge and probably the rape statistics in India is not higher than somewhere else (need to check, though I also know that statistics is affected by the rate of reports etc), nevertheless the fear exists.

I don’t have experience of traveling alone that far (mostly travelled alone in Europe and stayed in the pre-booked places, kinda secured comfort zones; also never hiked or stayed in the tent), but I want to challenge myself and go to India, as for me it will be THE experience, to immerse in the life there and just to understand myself better through that trip. Sounds like a cliché in search for enlightenment, probably, partially it is like that.

I would love to hear from the women who travelled alone to India, what were the difficulties, how they used the public transport, how expensive life there, the situation with booking on the place, or staying in some remote village in some strangers’ houses (inspired by the movies) etc - just everything about your travels to India, I would really appreciate if someone could share.
