Planning my first solo travel to SEA

First and foremost, I wish you all a great night and a happy new year.
I'm a 24y old male from The Netherlands and currently planning my trip to SEA which will take place between the end of June and August. So I have 6-8 weeks of travel time. During this time I'm 100% sure I want to travel from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh (or vice versa depending on what is most practical). I haven't planned my stay time in each place yet, that will come later. I will most likely be following a route from the Vietnam coracle: 'The Big One'.
Besides Vietnam I want to see another country. Currently deciding between either Cambodia or Thailand. Cambodia would be most practical because I could get there easily from Ho Chi Minh. While doing research on Cambodia, the following places stood out to me:
- Phnom Penh
- Siem Reap
- Battambang
- Koh Rong
Pretty sure the first 3 are worth visiting and I have read mostly positive things about them. While following some stories between 2010 and now Koh Rong seems to have changed. Some people say it is great, others say it is basically a 'shithole' where there are only parties. What is your experience visiting this island or hearing about it?
Thailand looks great to me, but a bit touristy. The food is obviously a big plus here. The following places stand out to me:
- Bangkok
- Chiang Mai
- Ko Lanta
- Ko PhaNgan
Because these places are pretty far apart from each other, I would have to backtrack a lot. Is it worth it to go to Chiang Mai from Bangkok only to go back down again to Ko Lanta? Also, Ko Lanta seems a bit quiet and I'm not sure if this is a great place for a solo traveller. Have any of you been there?
Besides the choice of these 2 countries, I'm always open to other suggestions.
I'm also not sure how I want to travel through Vietnam. Currently deciding between renting a scooter or traveling with busses. The former is risky, but I only hear positive things from the people that have done it. The latter is the safest but also the most 'boring' option. I've read a lot of experiences on different sites, but I would greatly appreciate your input.
TL:DR - Should I travel to Cambodia or Thailand after my visit to Vietnam?
