New rental scam when renting convertible cars in the US?
I've done US road trips between 2008-2016, always in a convertible. Sometimes you get lucky and the rental company gives you a Mustang, sometimes it's a more average Sebring 200. Either way though it's a sedan car...
This month though, when trying to book my rental for next summer, I've started to see a disturbing trend:
Rather than websites listing their convertibles as a 'Ford Mustang or similar...' some websites have started listing 'VW Beetle or similar...'
That is completely unacceptable in my opinion. You don't fly thousands of miles to drive around the US in a tiny European car. I'm worried that the companies are starting to fill their convertible range with these smaller cars, luring you in with the promise of mustangs.
I was so concerned that I just called up Dollar and Alamo. One said that the VW Beetle is in their selection of convertibles. The other said that a convertible Mini is in their range. I'm not enjoying these conversations...
Anyway, my question is... has anyone else noticed this trend? Is this actually something new that is happening that we should all be aware of, or is this something that I've just not noticed before?
