LA to Seattle via Eastern Oregon
I have a work assignment that's going to take me to Seattle in mid-December. I have a friend that lives in Willows, CA, so I plan on stopping there overnight as my "halfway" point. On the way back down, I plan on swinging through Carson City, NV to see another friend.
I plan on driving up there via I-5 and taking it a bit slower on the way back, via eastern Oregon past Crater Lake. What would be a good route to take, while also making decent time from Seattle to Carson City? I plan on taking the 395 from Carson City to the 14 to get back to LA. I'll be taking a 4WD pickup with new highway-tread tires and one set of tire chains.
Also, as a non-white person that hasn't gone anywhere else in the country except Nevada, should I expect to get stared at (or worse) through the small towns in southern and eastern Oregon and northeastern California? I grew up in a mostly-white town in the sticks, so it's not something that I'm not used to. Due to my work truck's crappy fuel economy and small tank, I'll be stopping every 150-200 miles to fill up.
