Driving I5 north in December in U-Haul?

tldr Advice/input from people experienced with driving I5 north from LA to Portland in early december?

My partner and I were temporarily living in southern california and are now moving back to Portland, OR. We're planning to drive I5 north starting next weekend, Dec 1 and do the drive over a couple days. Last time we did this drive (but going South), it was summer time and we had a detour so we skipped Shasta-Trinity Forest entirely.

How worried should we be about the driving conditions? Looking ahead, there is both snow and rain in the forecast going through Shasta-Trinity, and I know snow and rain is also common among the passes on this drive at this time of year. We'll be driving a 15 foot U-haul and we will have chains in the car (though neither of us have used them before). I grew up in the Boston, MA area so have my share of experience driving in the snow, but not on mountain passes. We've spread the drive out over 3 days so as to avoid driving at night. The plan is for our last day to wake up early and drive from Redding to Portland so that we can tackle all the mountain passes in daylight.

Any input greatly appreciated!
